Dear AWA friends,

As I say farewell toNairobi and many friends here and head for Turkey, our next posting, via a year’s sojourn in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Prague, I congratulate and welcome Barbara Canelas, the new chair elect and the members of the new Board.

My next adventure is to study Turkish with Rosetta Stone. In the next year, my head will be swirling like a dervish and I will welcome breaks from studies by hearing news from you.

This has been a dramatic year. The organization is on course after four successful fund raisers.  We have our sponsors and donors to thank for exceeding our target goal of raising 2 million Kenyan shillings.  This meant we were able to sustain our commitments while addressing critical needs during the post-election crisis.  Establishing innovations and upgrades to streamline operations, we have gained higher visibility.  The AWA’s website has become a valuable community based forum for information benefiting not only organizations we have reciprocal relationship but the entire Kenyan community.

Culminating this special year, we celebrated at the Muthaiga Club our milestone 50th anniversary.  Our mandate to help disadvantaged women, children and the elderly is visibly at work in many areas, whether it is the wing at the Kenyatta Hospital for survivors of gender violence, the disabled children at Star Disability, or investing in bright young students at Starehe Girls Centre for the future of Kenya.

In May, we had our annual Appreciation Lunch in honor of all our volunteers. We appreciate the US Ambassador for opening his Residence for us. This wonderful tradition allows us to recognize each and everyone who gave time, skill and talent to benefit those less fortunate.

Volunteering gives real ownership of the organization and your community. The jobs you do give relevance to your life. Expand your horizons. Use your skills and knowledge to spread your wings to the fullest.

I leave you with one thought, in life be a participant, not a spectator. Take charge, participate fully and actively.  Savor and share.  Soar!

Peace and love,

Cleo Appleton
